HEMOFEEL™ is the new membrane for continuous renal support made of polymethylmethacrylate, a highly hemo- and biocompatible material designed by TORAY – a global leader in advanced materials.
The most important requirement of a membrane designed for blood purification therapy is to provide maximal hemocompatibility by provoking the least possible inflammatory response in the patients exposed to it. In the setting of AKI, the inflammatory response caused by the dialysis procedure may have clinical consequences such as hemodynamic instability, immune dysregulation, or delayed recovery of renal function.
Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is a synthetic polymer designed to provide maximum hemo- and biocompatibility to the patient as well as ensure the best renal replacement. PMMA membranes are recognized for their unique hemo- and biocompatibility aimed at improving the patient’s clinical condition with immunoprotective effect.
In addition, the PMMA membrane adds a third dimension to dialysis: ADSORPTION. If through diffusion and convection it is possible to remove molecules of small and medium molecular weight, adding adsorption provides the ability to remove molecules of medium and high molecular weight. The adsorptive capacity is crucial for the removal of molecules involved in the inflammatory cascade, among which cytokines and other inflammatory mediators. HEMOFEEL™ can therefore be classified as a Cytokine Adsorptive Hemofilter.
HEMOFEEL™ is a unique membrane that provides therapy at 3 levels:
- Immunoprotection
- Immunomodulation
- Innovative renal support
